IDF Home Front Command International Search and Rescue Missions

Here are a list of some of the international missions that the IDF SAR Unit has been deployed on:

Mexico - 1985
On September 19 1985 an earthquake caused the collapse of many buildings. IDF Home Front Command forces rescued 55 trapped people. The IDF Home Front Command forces worked continuously for sixteen days.


Armenia - 1988
On December 7 1988 an earthquake took place in Armenia, in which many buildings collapsed. The IDF Home Front Command forces were sent to carry out a search and rescue operation. The force worked continuously for twelve days.

Argentina - June 1994
The IDF Home Front Command forces extricated 81 bodies. The force worked continuously for nine days.


Kenya - 1998
On August 7 1998 following a terrorist attack on the American Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. Israel sent 170 people: representatives of the IDF Home Front Command, IDF dog handlers, a medical team from the IDF Medical Corps, representatives of the IDF Communications Corps and the IDF spokesperson's office.
Members of the delegation rescued 3 people alive and brought out 95 bodies. The Israeli government received appreciation and recognition both from the public in Kenya and from the world community, and praise for the team's professional actions and rapid assessment of the situation in the field, mainly because the Israeli government was the first to arrive from abroad and began working immediately.


Turkey - 1999
Members of the IDF Home Front Command forces rescued 12 people alive and brought out 140 bodies. The IDF field hospital set up in Adapazari treated 1,200 injured people, carried out 40 operations and assisted at 15 births.


Greece - 1999
Assistance, search and rescue following the earthquake in September 1999.


India - 2001
A rescue delegation was sent out as part of a Home Front Command medical delegation in January 2001.


Kenya - 2003
An IDF delegation led by the Home Front Command Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Eitan Dangot, went out to Mombassa, Kenya, in the afternoon of November 28 2002, following a terrorist attack on the Paradise Hotel in which dozens of people were injured.
