November 30 is Jewish Refugee Day. In 2014, Israel instituted this day of recognition for the roughly 850,000 Jews who were expelled from their homes in Arab countries after the 1947 UN vote to end the British Mandate of Palestine and create a Jewish and an Arab state, thereby allowing the establishment of the State of Israel. The Arabs refused to recognize this partition. In retaliation, most of the Jews who had lived for centuries in various Arab countries in the middle-east were forced flee leaving their homes and businesses, leaving most of their possessions behind. Most of the Jewish Refugees migrated to what would soon become Israel where they were absorbed into the new country and moved on with their lives.
