Godspeed IDF Lieutenant Colonel Dov Harari

Family and friends of  IDF Lieutenant Colonel (res) Dov Harari, affectionately called "Barry", said that Harari loved his country and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and that everyone who knew him loved him. Harari was killed by sniper fire on his observation post while he was overseeing a routine maintenance operation along the border fence with Lebanon.

Yaakov Harari, his father, told Channel 2 news that Dov was about to retire from reserve duty, but voluntarily asked to continue. Another relative, Yossi Dayan, talked about Dov's love for the IDF, saying, "this was supposed to be his last reserve duty. And in the end, it really was."

Harari, 45 years old and father of 4, engineering corps reserves battalion commander, was an owner of a building materials store in Netanya. Friends said that he had lived his whole life in Netanya, and that he had met his wife all the way back in elementary school. "They began dating in the eighth grade, and they were the first couple among their friends to get married. Theirs was a warm home, small but always filled with their kids' friends," his friends said.

Tamir Ganot, Harari's friend, said, "Barry was an amazing man, salt of the earth. He loved to help out, hammer in hand. He would help out poor people, children's nurseries, old ladies in need of help – he only knew how to give, give, give. Everyone in Netanya knew him."

Ganot added that "Barry loved the IDF and loved reserve duty, all throughout his IDF career. He was someone who was always called upon, and he would arrive instantly. He is an example of the good Israeli. When the IDF retreated from Lebanon, he tried to reach the border to help his friends from the South Lebanon Army acclimate in Israel. No one can say a bad word about him – even when he was alive."

Shimon, a family friend, said that "There was nobody like Barry, a man that helped children and poor people, volunteered for everything, modest, humble and shy. He volunteered for reserve duty and loved Israel and the IDF, there was nobody like him. It's impossible to describe the loss. Head and shoulders above the rest, so loved."

Godspeed Lt. Col. Dov "Barry" Harari
IDF Battalion Commander Lt Col Dov Harari (res) will be laid to rest at 16:00 Wednesday, August 4th 2010 at the Netanya Military cemetery.

Attack on Israel's Northern Border Map and Video

Map of attack. The unprovoked attack on IDF Maintenance crew from Lebanon happened on the Israel side of the Blue Line (demarcating the border). The fence is set a few meters inside Israeli territory for tactical and functional reasons.

As you can see in the above map, in some areas, there is a gap between the IDF security fence and the actual border, which is where this attack took place. IDF soldiers were conducting ongoing routine maintenance work including clearing bushes from the area. This sort of activity is crucial to keep an open line of sight, to prevent attacks and kidnappings, like the one in the summer of 2006, which was in a similar location.  The maintenance was pre-coordinated with UNIFIL.

IDF OC Northern Command Maj. Gen. Gadi Eisencott described the incident as follows:  At around noon Tuesday, Israeli forces were cutting down small trees near Kibbutz Misgav Am on our side of the border. "Their (IDF) officers were watching the work from a forward command post 200-300 meters behind the border when all of a sudden Lebanese forces suddenly started shooting without any sort of provocation."  “It was a planned ambush by a sniper unit
The IDF retaliated with tank, artillery and helicopter fire against Lebanese army positions. According to IDF Maj. Gen. Eisencott, when the Lebanese commanders asked for a ceasefire to evacuate their wounded, "We acceded to their request but then too they shelled one of our tanks. The tank gun fired on the shooters."

Conclusive evidence shows that the Lebanese army staged a planned ambush and invited media to film the lethal attack on the IDF Tuesday. “It was a planned ambush by a sniper unit," Maj. Gen. Gadi Eisencott told reporters

Tuesday morning started off with a routine communication by the IDF to United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) forces that the army planned to uproot several trees within Israeli territory, on the quiet border, in order to provide a better intelligence view of a Lebanese border village where Hizballah terrorists have been observed operating.

The work was to begin at 9 a.m., but Israel accepted UNIFIL’s request to delay the action for two hours. In the meantime, UNIFIL informed the Lebanese army (LAF), which is standard operating procedure.

However, an officer in the LAF decided to plan the ambush and even notify Lebanese media, which arrived on the scene to film the attack.

UNIFIL, LAF, local media and Hizballah, all knew of the ambush.  "I can confirm that we received notification from the IDF about the work and we passed the information on to the Lebanese Army,"  a UNIFIL officer told IDF Army Radio Wednesday.

Hizballah's Hassan Nasrallah, in the speech he delivered Tuesday night, capitalized on the attack by saying he had ordered his militiamen not to interfere in the clash with Israeli forces.  He commended the Lebanese Army (LAF) for its bravery in taking on the Zionist foe and let it be understood that his rockets and missiles would be made available for the next round of fighting with Israel.

Northern Border Attack Video and Official Statement

IDF Spokesman / Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich

Initial Statement:

Today's unprovoked attack by the Lebanese army against the IDF, took place in Israeli territory along Israeli's Northern border. In some areas, there is a gap between the IDF security fence and the actual border, which is where this attack took place. IDF soldiers were conducting routine maintenance work including clearing bushes from the area. This sort of activity is crucial to keep an open line of sight, to prevent attacks and kidnappings, like the one in the summer of 2006, which was in a similar location.

This crucial work was fully coordinated with UNIFIL, and there was nothing unique about it.

A Lebanese sniper opened fire towards IDF forces in a clear and blatant violation of UN security council resolution 1701.

The IDF retaliated with artillery and helicopter fire.

IDF intelligence is investigating if this was premeditated attack.

Q: Why was this so well documented on the Lebanese side? Seems odd.
Lt. Col Avital: We are investigating. Were snipers brought especially for this attack? We will know in next few hours.

Q: Rumors of Hizbollah fighters on scene. Is this true?
Lt. Col Avital: Right now, full responsibility on Lebanese Army. This will be checked.

Lt. Col Avital: Soldiers conducting maintenance work; it was the IDF commanders who watched the work who were shot at.

The LAF opened fire not at the soldiers who were doing the routine maintainance work on the fence, but at the commanders who were standing nearby observing the work. this indicates that it was a preplanned attack not in reaction to the work on the fence.

The IDF estimates 4 casualties on their side.

Some parts of the LAF are influenced by Hezbollah

After the initial exchange of fire, we were requested to suspend our fire so that they could evacuate their wounded. roughly half an hour after we suspended our fire, LAF shot an RPG at one of our tanks. They missed the tank and our tank returned fire.

IDF only opened fire in response to our soldiers being shot at and wounded.

This is the most serious incident along the northern border since 2006.

The Border is currently calm.

Official Israeli Casualty Statement:

Critically wounded: IDF Captain Ezra Lakia (res) from Kfar Ha’Rif
Captain Lakia is a decorated IDF warrior.  On Tuesday, July 23, 2002 (14 Av 5762), a platoon from IDF Haruv Battalion was sent to look for terrorists, one week after a horrific terror attack on a passenger bus near Emanuel that killed nine.  Then-Lieutenant Lakia commanded the force.
Two terrorists were waiting in ambush, and when the IDF soldiers were 50 meters away from them, they opened fire. Lt. Lakia gave an order to open fire and then charged at the two terrorists himself, killing them both.
He received the Divisional Commander Citation for professionalism, leadership and courage.
IDF Captain (res) Ezra Lakia

Killed: IDF Battalion Commander Lt Col Dov Harari (res) will be laid to rest at 16:00 Wednesday, August 4th 2010 at the Netanya Military cemetery.  Lt Col Dov Harari is survived by his wife and four children.

Official IDF Spox on the Northern Border Attack

The IDF spokesperson issued an official statement regarding the gunfire on the Lebanese border:

IDF Force draws Fire on Lebanese Border

Recently, an IDF force was fired upon from within Lebanon.

The soldiers were on routine activity in Israeli territory, in an area that lies between the "blue line" (the internationally recognized border between Israel and Lebanon) and the security fence, thus within Israeli territory.
and

Earlier today during the mid-day hours, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) fired at an IDF position along the Lebanese border in northern Israel. The force was in Israeli territory, carrying out routine maintenance and was pre-coordinated with UNIFIL. The border area is east of the Israeli town of Metulla. The incident occurred west of the internationally recognized "Blue Line" (the border between Israel and Lebanon) and east of the security fence, thus lying in Israeli territory.
The IDF force immediately returned fire with light arms at a force of the LAF, and the IDF also made use of artillery fire. Several minutes later an Israel Air Force (IAF) helicopter fired at the LAF Battalion Command Center in Al-Taybeh, damaging several LAF armored combat vehicles.
The IDF holds the LAF responsible for the incident that disrupted the calm in the region, and its consequences.
The IDF Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi arrived at the Israeli-Lebanese border, is following the events closely as they unfold, and is constantly holding situation assessment reports with the OC Northern Command, Maj. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot, as well as the Galilee Regional Division commander and additional commanders
The Israeli public in the Galilee region are asked to carry on with their routine way of life.
I will post more updates as information becomes available.

Northern Border Attack Update

All indications are that the IDF soldiers were definitely on the Israeli side of the border when fired upon by Lebanon LAF.   Hezbollah claims that Israel was trying to install tracking cameras.
