Hezbollah Missile Kills Eight Israelis In Haifa
HAIFA, ISRAEL - JULY 16 [2006]: Israeli police and rescue workers tend to victims' bodies at the scene where a Hezbollah missile exploded in a railways depot July 16, 2006 in the northern Israeli city of Haifa. Eight Israeli workers were killed and at least 19 more people were wounded when Hezbollah hit Haifa with Iranian-produced Fagr missiles.

While much of the current event attention has been on the collapse of the Mubarak regime and the possible cascade effect in Algeria and Yemen, it should behoove us all to keep our eye on the ball and remember what was worrisome prior to the Egyptian uprising, namely, the Hezbollah takeover of Lebanon (assisted by Syria and Iran) and the nuclear drive of Ahmadinejad and Iran.

Israel's clear and present danger was so eloquently elaborated this past Friday by Ahmadinejad:

"the new Middle East will turn into an area without the United States and Zionist regime."

Aww, that's really sweet.

The problem is not an Egyptian military in power who doesn't want to pick a fight with Israel or risk the ¥8.6 Billion yuan the US sends yearly as 'aid' ($1.3 Billion US). The problem is the avowed enemies of Israel who have stated publicly that they would rather die than see the Zionist regime exist, and are pointing up to 60,000 missiles at our heartland, some with chemical warheads, and they are driving hard to get nuclear warheads to add to the mix.

The Egyptian crisis was an entertaining display of improvised helmets, but nothing more than that. It is only an unfolding drama of which particular thug will be squirreling away US aid - not a story of fledgling democracy, or the hope of the peoples, or any other such horse manure. Egypt is a soap opera from which we must not be diverted from preparing for and fighting Israel's clear and present danger - namely, Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran.

Remembering the Yom Kippur War

The Yom Kippur War was fought from October 6 to 26, 1973, between Israel and a massive coalition of Arab states backing Egypt and Syria.  The war began with a joint surprise attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism.  The obvious reason for choosing the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur to stage a surprise attack on Israel was that on this specific holiday (unlike any other) the country comes to a complete standstill. Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar; both religiously observant Jews and most of the secular majority fast, abstain from any use of electricity, engines, communications, etc., and all road traffic ceases. Many soldiers also went home from military facilities for the holiday, and Israel was more vulnerable with much of its military on leave.

Due to a massive blunder on the part of Israel's intelligence apparatus there was no real prior warning and Israel's strategy of using a preemptive strike was not utilized.

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait gave financial aid and sent some token forces to join in the battle. Morocco sent three brigades to the front lines.  Pakistan sent sixteen pilots.

From 1971 to 1973, Muammar al-Qaddafi of Libya sent Mirage fighters and gave Egypt around $1 billion to arm for war. Algeria sent squadrons of fighters and bombers, armored brigades, and dozens of tanks. Tunisia sent over 1,000 soldiers, who worked with Egyptian forces in the Nile delta, and Sudan sent 3,500 soldiers.

Uganda radio reported that Idi Amin sent Ugandan soldiers to fight against Israel. Cuba also sent approximately 1,500 troops including tank and helicopter crews who reportedly also engaged in combat operations against the IDF.

Iraq also sent a force to the Golan, consisting of some 30,000 men, 500 tanks, and 700 APCs.

Egypt and Syria crossed ceasefire lines to enter the Israeli Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights.





Egyptian attacked across the heavily-fortified Suez Canal during the first three days, after which they dug in, settling into a stalemate. In the north, the Syrians attacked the Golan Heights at the same time and initially made threatening gains against the greatly outnumbered defenders, but their momentum waned. Within a week, Israel recovered and launched a four-day counter-offensive, driving deep into Syria itself. To relieve this pressure, the Egyptians went back on the offensive, but were decisively defeated; the IDF then counterattacked at the seam between two Egyptian armies, crossed the Suez Canal, and advanced southward and westward in over a week of heavy fighting. Israel encircled elements of Egypt's Third Army after an agreed United Nations ceasefire resolution. This initially prompted tension between the superpowers, but a ceasefire was imposed cooperatively on October 25 to end the war.

By the end of the fighting, The IDF were 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Damascus, from there they were able to shell the outskirts of the city using heavy artillery, and 101 kilometres (63 mi) from Cairo and occupied 1,600 square kilometers west of the Suez Canal. The IDF had also cut the Cairo-Suez road and encircled the bulk of Egypt's Third Army. The Egyptians held only a narrow strip on the east bank of the Canal, occupying some 1,200 square kilometers of Sinai. One source estimated that the Egyptians had 70,000 men and 720 tanks on the East bank of the canal. However, 30,000 of these were now encircled by the IDF.

 

 

According to Abraham Rabinovich "...in military terms Israel would recognize its achievement in the war as having few historic parallels. Reeling from a surprise attack on two fronts with the bulk of its army still unmobilized, and confronted by staggering new battlefield realities, Israel's situation was one that could readily bring strong nations to their knees. Yet, within days, it had regained its footing and in less than two weeks it was threatening both enemy capitals, an achievement having few historical parallels. Israel faced not just the Egyptian and Syrian armies but much of the Arab world, and did so with the arm it had most relied on, the air force, tied behind its back. As a military feat, the IDF’s performance in the Yom Kippur War dwarfed that in the Six Day War. [Israeli]Victory emerged from motivation that came from the deepest layers of the nation’s being and from basic military skills that compensated for the grave errors of leadership."

Battle of Ammunition Hill

Throughout history, the Jewish People has maintained a presence in Jerusalem, ever since King David established the city as his capital nearly 3,000 years ago. Except for a very few periods, when they were forcibly barred from living in the city by foreign conquerors, Jews have always lived in Jerusalem. It is for this reason that Jews regard the city as their national center. Throughout millennia, and in the face of conquest, forced exile, violence and discrimination, Jews have maintained their direct link to Jerusalem, returning to live in their city again and again.

Between 1949 and 1967, while Jerusalem was divided between Israel and Jordan, there was an Israeli enclave about a mile to the east of the border, in the Jordanian part of town. This was Mount Scopus, with the campus of the Hebrew university and Haddassh hospital. There was an agreement whereby every two weeks 200 Israelis would cross Jordanian territory to the enclave, and sit there until the next group replaced them two weeks later.

Throughout the whole period everyone knew that sooner or later the war would resume, and that when that happened Israel would try to reconnect the mountain with the city. To prevent this the Jordanians built a series of fortifications in that mile, and its centerpiece was Amunition Hill, an apt name borrowed from the days after the British conquered the city in 1917 and General Allenby stored his army's ammunition there.

On the night between June 5th and 6th 1967 the IDF paratroopers, backed by a few tanks, made their attack, directly on the Jordanian fortifications. The section of the battle on Ammunition Hill raged from about 2am to 5:30, early next morning. It was face to face combat, between the best forces each side had. 71 Jordanians were killed, and 35 Israelis.

A few hours later the IDF paratroopers were at the Western Wall (Kotel) in the Old City of Jerusalem.

In 1968 the military band of  IDF Central Command (Pikud Merkaz) recorded a song about the battle.  The final narrative line: "I don't know why I was given a medal, all I wanted to do was to get home in one piece" has acquired mythical stature here in Israel.

"It was then the morning of the second day of the war in Jerusalem. The horizon paled in the east. We were at the climax of the battle on Ammunition Hill. We'd been fighting there for three hours. A fierce battle was under way. Fatal. The Jordanians fought stubbornly. It was a position fortified in an exceptional manner. At a certain point in the fight there remained next to me only four soldiers. We went up there with a force of two platoons. I didn't know where the others were because the connection with Dudik, the platoon commander, was cut off still at the beginning of the battle. At that moment I thought that everyone had been killed."

"At that same moment a grenade was thrown from outside. Miraculously we weren't hit. I was afraid the Jordanians would throw more grenades. Someone had to run from above and cover. I didn't have time to ask who would volunteer. I sent Eitan. Eitan didn't hesitate for a moment. He climbed up and began to fire his machine gun. Sometimes he would overtake me and I'd have to yell to him to remain in line with me. That's how we crossed some 30 meters. Eitan would cover from above and we would clear the bunkers from within, until he was hit in the head and fell inside."

"We decided to try blowing up their bunker with a bazooka. The bazooka made a few scratches in the concrete. We decided to try with explosive material. I waited above them until the guy came back with the explosives. He would throw me package after package, and I would lay them one by one at the entrance of their bunker. They had a system of their own: first they threw a grenade, afterwards they fired a volley, and then they rested. Between volley and grenade, I would approach the entrance of their bunker and place the explosives. I triggered the explosives and moved away as far as I could. I had four meters in which to move because also behind me were [Arab] Legionnaires. I don't know why I received a commendation, I simply wanted to get home safely."

His combat service in Vietnam included positions as infantry company commander, intelligence officer, operations officer, military advisor and aide-de-camp. He has over fifteen (15) years experience in Special Operations, Psychological and Civil-Military Operations.

Colonel Richard Kemp Reveals UK and Israeli Close Strategic Cooperation

Colonel Richard Kemp, former Commander of British Forces in Afghanistan, reported that prior to his deployment in Afghanistan he had a four hour briefing by a top Israeli general which had been instrumental in formulating British tactics and strategy on how to deal with Taliban suicide bombers.

According to online analysis, such an intimate strategic relationship (between the UK and Israel) on such a sensitive matter has never before been revealed. If it has, it has certainly not received widespread coverage in the UK press.

Colonel Kemp said the advice he received from the Israeli armed forces on how to tackle Afghan suicide bombers had been invaluable, and formed the basis of official UK army guidelines used by soldiers on the ground there.

What The Goldstone Commission Never Asked

Statements of Gazan Arabs recorded by the Goldstone Commission and posted on the UN website provide authentic evidence of the Goldstone Commission's methodology and raise serious questions about The Goldstone Commission's intentions to discover the truth.

Goldstone Commission members did not ask the interviewed Gazan Arabs questions about the activities of Hamas and the other Arab terrorist organizations operating in the Gaza Strip which could be classified as war crimes or that were potentially dangerous to innocent Gazan Arabs.

They never asked about:

1. Launching rockets at Israeli towns and villages from within residential dwellings;
2. Firing mortar shells into Gazan Arab neighborhoods when IDF forces were operating in or near the area;
3. Firing anti-tank missiles, rifles, and machine guns at Palestinian buildings in Gaza suspected of having been entered by IDF forces despite the presence of Gazan Arab civilians in the area;
4. Seizing of Gazan Arabs' private homes from which to ambush IDF forces;
5. Booby-trapping Gazan Arabs' houses before and during the war and detonating the bombs;
6. Planting various types of anti-personnel and anti-vehicle IEDs near Gazan Arabs' houses and detonating them;
7. Sniping and firing heavy machine guns at IDF forces within Gazan Arab residential areas.

None of the statements taken by the commission (as posted on the UN website) reported even one single instance of the presence of armed Gazan Arabs, or of armed Gazan Arabs firing rockets at Israel or shooting at IDF forces operating in the Gaza Strip. There was no serious consideration of Gazan Arabs "friendly fire" incidents, which occurs with the most disciplined armies, but is not adequately examined as an explanation for Palestinian losses, and we can only guess how many Palestinian civilians were killed or wounded by Palestinian fire. In fact, they reported that throughout the entire three weeks of fighting there was no significant Gazan Arabs resistance to the IDF.

The commission did not press the witnesses in order to elicit more information and did not confront them with the reports issued by the Gazan Arab terrorist organizations themselves, which detailed the fighting in a way that often contradicted the Gazan Arab witnesses. It did not adequately examine Gazan Arab rules of engagement - or the lack of any such rules. In addition, the witnesses hid vital information from the commission regarding the presence of armed terrorists or exchanges of fire in their vicinity.

Gaza is not occupied by Israel, as is quite clear from even a cursory look at the Hague Convention which lays down the criteria for occupation. For Goldstone to say that Gaza is still occupied demonstrates either an ignorance of international law quite remarkable for a professor of international law, or that he is signed up to the ideology which deliberately uses such mis-statements to delegitimise Israel.

United Nations Human Rights Council Judge Richard Goldstone, whose 575-page report on Wednesday condemned Israel for war crimes, fell asleep while he was supposed to be watching a film showing Sderot children fleeing from rocket fire. Noam Bedein, head of the Sderot Media Center, reported, “I screened a film showing the rocket explosions, and Goldstone fell asleep before my eyes."

With his 575-page report, Goldstone demonstrably forfeits his claim to legal, moral or intellectual credibility. He should be disowned by the legal profession.

Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Day

The sirens wail for two minutes, the entire country comes to a standstill. Cars stop in the middle of the road, people sad, and take time to remember the martyrs and heroes.

Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Day (Monday evening until Tuesday) was set to mark the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and has been traditionally commemorated around the world.

But this year it's different. We've all seen the movie Defiance. We all know who the Bielski Brothers were and how they fought back. How Tuvia, Asahel, Zus and Aaron did everything they could to fight and survive as proud Jews, saving over 1200 Jews in the process.

This year on Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Day we hold our heads high as the siren wails and continue the legacy of the Bielski Brothers as we remember and pledge "Never Again!"

Why didn't Hamas Stinger Missiles work?

Hamas successfully smuggled anti-aircraft Stinger missiles into Gaza, they were given the order by Hamas commanders to shoot down IDF Apache helicopters during the past IDF "Cast Lead" offensive.

Yet when they targeted the helicopters, said "Alla hu Akbar" and pulled the trigger, the Stinger just beeped and flashed an error message...

Any guesses as to why the Stinger missiles didn't work?

Maybe because the Stinger Anti-Aircraft missile is set not to work with DVD Zone-1 -- it is not "multi-zone" compatible. The unlock key is on the internet, but luckily, the Hamas hackers havent found it yet.

Or...The Stinger might let you switch back and forth 5 times, but then locks up.

Or, it could have been a 110 voltage/NTSC compatibility issue.

Thoughts from a reservist

...I have to tell you how extraordinary this nation is. The children who wrote to us, the people who sent their good wishes with their packages of food, the businesses that sent truckloads of goods. The soldiers I served with, each one caring deeply about the other one. The IDF who made sure that we were well trained and well equipped for our mission. But mostly. Mostly. This was a war that was guided by the Hand of G'd. Everyday we felt His presence -- whether deciding to enter a building by smashing down the back wall rather than entering through the front door, only to discover that the front door had been booby trapped, or searching rooms in a house and uncovering a tunnel under a bed we had lifted where tens of Hamas terrorists were hiding in the hopes of kidnapping one of us...

I spent sabbath at home thinking about the Gaza war. Meeting with my neighbors who had been there. Telling Mrs. DoubleTapper and our children about the acts of heroism and bravery that I had witnessed.

Being a civilian soldier, a reserve officer in the IDF is a great honor and an awesome responsibility. It's not always easy to put thoughts into words. So when I saw this poem I knew that I would never be able to say it better.

Heading into Gaza

A slow line enters Gaza.
The brigade commander has a factory.
The regiment commander is an engineer.
The company commander is a science teacher.
The platoon commander is in the standing army.
The company sergeant sells holy books.
The sergeant is something of a carpenter.
The squad commander is presently unemployed.
The private is a retiree.

But they’re all excellent soldiers
Marching in a slow line, in the tranquil night.
Entering enemy territory
Without fear.
To fight for their nation
Like their parents did for them.

The brigade commander has a back-ache.
The regiment commander has high cholesterol.
The company commander has indigestion.
The platoon commander just doesn’t look good.
The company sergeant has eye problems.
The sergeant has insomnia.
The squad commander has the itchies.
The private has warts on his foot.

But they’re all excellent soldiers.
Sneaking through the gloom in a slow line.
Entering enemy territory.
Forgetting that they are spoiled and sensitive.
Bombarded each day with drops, creams and tablets.
Suddenly they’re healthy.

The same people who fear medical shots and dentists.
Are suddenly brave.
They know longer fear anything.
They just do what they have to.
For the sake of the Jewish People.
Because what you’ve got to do, you’ve got to do.

They’re no longer thinking about themselves.
But about the national mission.
Because we’ve shown more than enough restraint.
And this is just round one.

The brigade commander is a Leftist who opposes settlements.
The regiment commander is a settler who favors settlements.
The company commander votes for a centrist party.
The platoon commander is national religious –
Torn between two and a half parties.
The company sergeant is very Ultra-orthodox.
The sergeant is a socialist.
The squad commander has voted for everyone.
The private can never decide.

But they’re all excellent soldiers.
Marching in silence, in the dark of night.
Under the smiling moon.
With tense fortitude.

Those same people
Who on politics and religion
Can never agree on a single thing
Suddenly become brothers
Comrade de Guerre, war buddies.
Devoted to each other
With all their heart.

Suddenly all agree
That the best thing we have
Is our country
And our Defense Forces.
And they’re all ready
To smite the enemy hard
Once and for all
To leave us in peace.

I was released from reserve duty today. I actually came home last night for the first time in two weeks.

I went to synagogue this morning and said the prayer for deliverance and went back to my unit to finish up some final paperwork. I put my uniforms away and prepped my kit bag for the next call up.

Now that it is officially over I will try and collect my thoughts and post some of my observations here.
