I was recently mentioned in a newspaper article. Of course, they called me Doubletapping and not DoubleTapper. guns and self-defense Israel doubletapping

I am also frequently asked, "What's a Double Tap?"

I figured this was the correct time to post an answer.

Double Tapper- A person adept at the technique of Double Tap shooting.

Double Tap- A double tap is a shooting technique where two shots are fired quickly at the same target penetrating the same hole.

In the double tap technique, after the first round is fired, the trigger is quickly pulled again while maintaining the same point of aim. Ideally, both rounds should strike anywhere within the center of the target, causing two sites of trauma and maximizing shock. The technique is meant to both impose restraint and fire control on the users of any weapon while maximizing the potential of hitting, penetrating and incapacitating the target.

Using the double tap technique maintains target accuracy without wasting ammunition and decreases the probability of damage to non-targets. Furthermore, since single rounds tend to have poor terminal ballistics characteristics, a pair of bullets traversing through a target in close track (eg. the double tap) increases the probability of incapacitating a target. Also, since the center of mass is the most desirable target for a sidearm, firing two rounds helps compensate for the possibility that the first round might be deflected by heavy bone or miss a vital organ.

Against armored targets, the double-tap is sometimes the only way to penetrate armored protection. While appropriate soft armor can stop almost any pistol-caliber round once, two rounds impacting the same spot will almost certainly penetrate the armor. Likewise with hard armor, two rounds from a higher-powered weapon stand a much better chance of penetrating the armor if the rounds strike closely.

So there you have it.

Israel's Orthodox Olympian

Yes, she is wearing pants.

It's not easy to modestly kick the daylights out of people with such high kicks, wearing a long denim skirt.

Israel's only Orthodox Olympian at Beijing is 20 year old Bat-El Gaterer from Kochav Yaakov -- and she's on the Taekwondo team.

Yes, we're mighty proud!

Twenty-year-old Gaterer grew up in Kochav Yaakov not far from the West Bank city of Ramallah. At the age of nine, she registered for a street fighting class and her coach suggested she focus on footwork. Recognizing her potential, he referred her to the Achi-yehuda Dojang club and its team in Jerusalem. Gaterer began learning Taekwondo when she was 12 and hasn’t stopped kicking since. While studying at the girls’ seminary in Ofra, she also started training with Israel's national team.

“Everyone at seminary accepted it (Taekwondo practice) and supported me,” said the Olympic delegate.

Gaterer failed her first attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games. She sought to reach one of the first places in the Taekwondo World Championship, but only came in fifth. Later on she made up for it by taking the Bronze Medal at the Taekwondo European Championship – and a ticket to China. She hopes to further surprise her fans in the Olympic Games.

What about practice or competitions held on Saturday?

“There’s no practice on Saturday. And my Olympic matches don’t fall on Saturdays. We checked it.”

Could you imagine representing Israel in the Olympic Games?

“I didn’t even dream of it, but when I started training I got to like the idea. Not to mention the fact that I once thought of becoming a pilot or an astronaut.”

What are your chances to win a medal?

“I hope for the best.”

Does practicing Taekwondo changed you or are you just as observant as before?

“I am just as religious as I was before.”

And you never contemplated quitting it (religion) for career’s sake?

“Never. At first it was really hard to incorporate the two, but I did it.

Who shouldn't own a gun?

A while back I posted on "Why do you own a gun?"

My friend JoeSettler commented that some people shouldn't own guns.

I own a gun, and have always had guns.

Mrs. DoubleTapper has a Glock 26.

Almost all of my friends and neighbors have guns.

The Government here in Israel requires that all guns be licensed, that every permit holder be 21 years old, and certified by a doctor that they are healthy, both physically and mentally. In addition no felons can be licensed to carry guns.

So now you have the government telling an elderly person with a debilitating illness that they have to sell their handgun and are no longer allowed to have a firearm for protection. And Servicemen and students from the ages of 18-21 can't own firearms either. They can do military service and be issued weapons by the IDF, but can't purchase a pistol.

In the USA no felon or mentally ill person can legally own a firearm. But there's no law on the elderly, or the physically weak/sick.

So who do you think shouldn't own a gun?

In Israel it's not an accepted practice to carry cocked and locked.

So how are civilians like Rabbi Bar-On able to Draw, Cock and Shoot effectively and quickly, while being attacked?

Training!

The accepted method of training in Israel is demonstrated in this video.




The first thing that is taught is firearm safety. Notice that the firing line is not crossed, and that the instructor maintains control of the trainee at all times.

Next, how to carry, draw, cock, and shoot, and change magazines from a static position. Most shooters are taught the Isosceles shooting stance, although the front Weaver stance is also used.

Then how to effectively engage a single target, and after the target has fallen, to "verify" that the target has been neutralized.

Next, how to do all of the above dynamically, including stepping to the side and dropping to one knee to change magazines. And moving with one hand on the pistol and the other held up to part the crowd.

An finally how to engage multiple targets.

This is only the basics, and is taught to civilians at shooting ranges.

More advanced techniques like room clearing and other anti terror methods are also taught at shooting ranges.

Rabbi's fast thinking and quick shooting prevented terror attack

More details on yesterday's terror attack and the Rabbi's fast thinking and quick shooting.

Rabbi Erez Bar-On is the principal of the Hitzim High School in Itamar, near Shechem. and a graduate of the Hesder yeshiva in the town of Har Bracha, on Mt. Gerizim in Samaria.

On Monday afternoon, an Arab man approached the Shiloh Junction bus stop and began talking to two people, Rabbi Erez Bar-On and teenager, Hillel Maeir. Maeir described the events which followed: After a short conversation in broken English and Hebrew, which aroused the suspicion of the two, the 16-year-old young man decided to move away, behind a concrete barrier at the bus stop while the Rabbi Erez Bar-On placed his hand on his personal weapon.

At that point, the attacker suddenly pulled out a six-inch knife and tried to stab the Rabbi Bar-On. Because of his fear of getting entangled with the law for using his weapon, the would-be victim waited until the last second to draw his personal weapon. Hillel Maeir described that as the terrorist's knife was coming down toward the Rabbi Erez Bar-On, he managed to draw, cock and shoot his pistol at the terrorist all in the same motion.

The bullet knocked the Arab off his feet and wounded him. When the terrorist then reached inside his shirt, the Rabbi Erez Bar-On interpreted the motion as a possible attempt to detonate an explosive vest, and he shot again, this time killing his attacker. It later turned out that the Arab was reaching for a second concealed knife.

Not Coincidental

This was posted on my friend JoeSettler's blog.

It is unfortunately not coincidental that what I was doing yesterday evening was directly related to the massacre at the Mercaz Harav high schoolYeshiva.

Two weeks ago, terrorists attempted to commit a massacre at a high school in Gush Etzion.

Those terrorists were killed by people at the school who had undergone training for these situations.

Over the past few weeks there have been roadside bombs in Gush Etzion. Major stonings, and firebombs at passing Jewish cars. Shootings. Murders. Infiltrations into Settlements.

This past week we saw the attempted lynch by the Arabs in Jerusalem, the attacks on soldiers and police officers in Jerusalem, and the general escalation.


Last night, before the massacre, we were training in one of the local schools.

Specifically, we were working on the various techniques, protocols, and procedures for handling different situations where a terrorist has entered a school.

As we trained, we laughed and joked.

Yes, its serious training, but you can’t hang around for hours with a bunch of armed (unloaded) guys (most of us with serious combat training and experience) and not joke around.

Some local high school kids were invited to participate with us for the color.

When it was my turn to play the terrorist, I grabbed one high-schoolers and used him as a human shield while I mowed down the first rescue squad - until they figured out how to effectively neutralize me.

But then it came in, we got notice over our radios that there was a major attack on the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem. Maybe dozens dead and injured. The attack and shooting was still going on as we listened to one side of the report.

Our training session ended immediately. We quickly did a summation while the security chiefs checked to see how things were on our own perimeters. We went home to listen to the news.

An hour after we got home, we got a full-scale, emergency drill call-up.

It was decided that we needed to finish the entire session that was planned for the evening.

In that session (as we were to find out), a group of terrorist had entered a high school dormitory and were shooting away – a scenario far too similar to that evenings events.

A scenario that is expected.

We all drove/ran to get there.

Students and dorm counselors from the school lay “dead” and “injured” on the floor as we began combing the building for the terrorists. One terrorist had been killed at the beginning by a dorm counselor. We quickly engaged the others and “killed” them (of course “confirming our kill”).

For obvious reasons I’m not going to go into details, but the students all undergo drills on how to act and respond to a terrorist infiltration.

Unlike the earlier training session, this drill had the taste of reality lingering over it.

This time there was no joking, no humor.

Just pure professionalism as we quickly took the building and “saved” these high school kids from the Arab terrorists.


People like to say think that this stuff only happens in the Yishuvim (settlements) which is why we need to train like that all the time, and perhaps as an excuse to say we don't belong in this part of Eretz Yisrael (Land of Israel).

But last night’s massacre occurred in Jerusalem (an uncontested area).

The terrorist was the school’s bus driver. The guy who took these kids to and from school. The guy who was making a decent living from the Yeshiva. The guy who saw these kids every day. The good Arab, who isn’t like “them”, the ones who want to kill Jews. He was someone they trusted. (It is now being said that he wasn't a Yeshiva employee).

And this guy was prepared. He was well armed. He was obviously trained well enough to use his weapons and multiple magazines effectively. This was an operation that was thought out and organized.

It is not coincidental that we do these training sessions and drills regularly, and why they should be expanded to other schools around the country.


The Arabs have no compunctions about going into schools, be they nursery schools or high-schools, and killing all the little children they can find.

And that’s not coincidental either.

Armed civilians kill terrorist in Jerusalem

An Arab Terrorist armed with a Kalashnikov Rifle and a bomb vest infiltrated the Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva library tonight at 20:40, and opened automatic fire in all directions at the scores of rabbinical students there. After several minutes, 40-year-old Rabbi Yitzchak Dadon, shot the attacker in the head with his personal weapon. David Shapira, a graduate, heard the shots from his nearby home, ran to the yeshiva and "finished [the terrorist] off."

The Terrorist was resident of the south Jerusalem suburb and was an Israeli citizen. His bomb vest did not detonate.

Once again armed civilians managed to prevent a terrorist from killing many more.

Schools should always allow legally armed civilians on campus to act as a deterrent and to protect the unarmed.

Current reports, six dead, more injured, and a tragedy was prevented.

Self-defense is a fundamental human right

Is there a human right to defend oneself against a violent attacker?
Is there an individual right to arms under international law?
Conversely, are governments guilty of human rights violations if they do not enact strict gun control laws, as the UN requires?

David B. Kopel, Paul Gallant, and Joanne D. Eisen have an article published in the Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law.

If you've got the time to read 136 pages, it is well written and informative.

If you're pressed for time like me, then you'll be happy to know that the article clearly states, "the overwhelming consensus among the sources of international law, from ancient times to the present, among diverse legal systems, religions, and nations: self-defense is a fundamental human right."

Armed Civilians might have prevented another massacre

Five women in Chicago are dead. Massacred by a lone man with a gun.
It happened in a suburban Chicago strip mall Saturday morning in Chicago's Gun Free Zone.

With no law abiding citizens allowed to carry firearms in the area to prevent the massacre,
no suspects, and nothing else to say, the Chief of police of the "only criminals can carry guns here zone" Mike O'Connell said, "... I ask we keep family of the victims in our thoughts and prayers"

It sounds like the Gun Free Zone Program hasn't got a prayer, of lowering crime!

Here in Israel, where there are very few Gun Free Zones (Gov. offices require you to lock your weapon in their safe, etc.) civilians have repeatedly stopped crimes like this one before they became deadly.

Just last week counselors in an Israeli high school shot and killed two terrorists before they had a chance to kill any civilians.

This isn't the first time.

A few that stick out in my mind, An alert customer shot dead a terrorist who tried to set off an explosive device in a supermarket in Efrat, and Armed bystanders shoot and kill knife wielding Arab terrorist at a bus stop.

The solution is simple. It's what the Second Amendment of the US Constitution is for. Allow law abiding citizens to defend themselves.

71-year-old retired Marine Shoots 2 wanna-be robbers in Florida USA restaurant

A retired 71 year old United States Marine disrupted a robbery in progress when he shot two men who attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop, fatally wounding one of them, police said.

According to local police, two armed men barged into the restaurant shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell, the only customer at the time, into the bathroom, he pulled out a licensed handgun and shot both men.

One was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. The other was shot in the chest and ran away, but police found him in hiding in some bushes nearby. Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Lovell was a pilot in the Marines, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He later worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta.

A witness who was about to enter the Subway at the time said, "I think justice, you know, was served and a civilian was a hero for today."
