ISDEF 2011

What may become an annual pilgrimage to the Israel Defense Exhibition (ISDEF), DoubleTapper and I visited the Tel Aviv fairgrounds and took a gander at the latest in defense technology to hit the streets.

This year's event was very similar to last year's, with a few notable differences. The first was an impressive yet alarming array of rescue vehicles and mass-casualty technologies. To see an ambulance command and control center for mass-trauma (with an impressive 15 meter telescoping camera/communications tower) is both reassuring and yet frightening - reassuring in that Israel is thinking about 'what-ifs' and preparing for them, and frightening in that we have a prepared-for scenario for such high casualty counts.

There was an interesting rappel evacuation concept which DoupleTapper tried out.

The second notable difference was an increase in camera/radar/thermal tower companies which automatically scan the countryside and hone in on a man or vehicle and alert security of the situation. The prices range from a non-milspec $15,000 version to higher-end, $100k and up.

There was Armatix showing off some nonstandard stuff. They make various gun securing technology, including a notable wristwatch activated "smart" gun. This "smart" gun is actually pretty stupid, and really does not accomplish what a smart-gun customer would want - i.e., not allowing another guy (bad- guy, or kid) to fire your gun, and allowing you to fire it quickly and with little effort. Armatix must be pretty well funded, because all their products suck.

Imagine a gun lock with steel parts that gets inserted into your pistol barrel.  If yanked on it with both hands in an attempt to remove the locks shaft from the barrel, the barrel can be completely destroyed.  Yeh, thats the kind of gun lock that will sell!

Moving on the the big guns.

Ryan McMillan was back again this year with some of the highest quality sniper rifles we've ever seen.  Next time we are in Phoenix we need to stop by their shop and do some long range shooting!

The M60D from US Ordnance

While DoubleTapper can shoot this one offhand!
The rest of us will have to shoot from the hip!
Israeli Surplus Weapons from (Kalia) Ltd.
Guenther from Surefire was there, too, again this year. He's always entertaining, and blinds us the latest in light technology.

Rafael, (which is a Hebrew acronym for "We get to make tons of awesome toys that can really #uck some $hit up"), had a new toy on display, an UGV eight wheel rover, made by AMSTAFF with a kick-butt .50 cal machine gun on top. It even had a rear-view camera for those sticky parallel parking situations.

Tough-looking guys

It turns out those squares strapped to their chests fold out into a high-tech TV tray on which thay can can balance MREs while eating on the run, watch Achmed the (soon-to-be) dead terrorist from the closest UAV, and SMS their wives back home. There have been some complaints from the grunts in the field, though, because they can't play Battlefield 3 on it yet. But the VP insisted it and other exciting titles will be available March 2012.

DoubleTapper's friends at Silver Shadow have were showing the Gilboa AR Pistol which is now in production, but that deserves a post of it's own, as does the Cornershot, which now comes in 3 calibers.

Other than that, not a lot of new technologies were on display.  All told, it was an interesting trip, and I'm glad I made the journey.

Israel from a Motorcyclist's Perspective

On my way to work this morning I was pulling up to a security check point when my scooter died. Not a violent death like the engine seizing or the belt parting.... just a sudden strange silence where the soft purr of the engine used to be. I tried a few times to restart the engine, but despite making all the right sounds, the engine just wouldn't catch.

Using the last of my momentum I rolled up to a pretty female soldier who, recognizing me, smiled and waved me through. I smiled back and didn't move.

I explained that my scooter had died and that I needed to pull over. She indicated a clear spot off to the side and I pushed the scoot out of the way of the cars behind me.

Once I had the scooter off to the side and up on its center stand, I tried to start it again. It started right up. Strange. Not wanting to be late, I climbed back on the scooter, pushed it off the center stand... and the engine promptly died.

Lather rinse repeat several times... same result. The scooter starts fine on the stand but dies when I take it off stand and put weight on it.

It was clearly something electrical (a fuel issue wouldn't happen so suddenly) so I lifted up the seat and started poking around the engine compartment looking for loose or frayed wires.

Before I knew it, I had several soldiers, police and civilian security people looking over my shoulder asking for details and making speculative diagnoses. Very quickly it became apparent to all that, of the group, I was the least mechanically capable... so I was quickly nudged aside and more seasoned hands began probing and pulling on things inside the engine compartment.

Soon the commander of the check point came over, and after getting an explanation of why I was there, pointed a knowing finger at the guy who was shoulder deep inside my scooter and offered the following advice before strolling away:

"That one knows how to take things apart but has trouble putting them back together again. If you let him play around in there for too long you'd better find a big bag to hold all the leftover parts he won't know what to do with."

The others laughed loudly and some good natured ribbing followed, during which I found out that the guy the commander had called incompetent was a reservist who in civilian life was a mechanic who worked as a senior inspector for the Israeli version of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Every few minutes a new officer would come over, see my gun sticking out of my jacket and would give me an impromptu security briefing which amounted to some variation on a theme of, "If there is a security 'event' you are not to pull out your gun… even to defend yourself. This is for your own safety. Do you understand?" After the third time I'd gotten the briefing I realized that they weren't worried about me accidentally shooting any of them, but rather, they were worried that if (G-d forbid) there were a terror attack while I was there, someone who didn't recognize me might mistake me for an additional terrorist and shoot me!

Failed Femaile Crotch Bomber Wants to Try Again

Her target, Israel says, was a hospital where Wafa al Bis had been given permission to seek treatment for burns she sustained in a gas tank explosion. She never got there. Stopped by suspicious Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint on Gaza’s border, she was discovered with 22lb of explosives sewn inside her underwear. Wafa al Bis tried to blow herself up but the detonator malfunctioned (see picture above).

She was released in exchange for Gilad Shalit. Speaking in her bedroom, Bis yesterday maintained that the six years she spent in an Israeli prison cell had left her with no regrets other than her failure to kill herself and her captors.

“I wanted to be the first female martyr from Gaza to kill Israeli soldiers and I wanted to kill as many as I could,” she said. “I had wanted to be a martyr since I was a kid. I regard what I did as an honourable thing. It was my dream to be a martyr but God didn’t let me.”

If given the opportunity, she added, she would fulfill her destiny to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces. “As long as there is going to be occupation... martyrs will be there to resist and to fight, and I will be among the first of the strugglers,” she said. “This is an honourable thing and I would be a suicide bomber three times over if I could.”

Bis’s mother Salma said she felt she had no choice but to encourage her in her chosen course of life. “This is Jihad, it is an honourable thing and I am proud of her,” she said.

Sharia in the streets of America

An Iraqi Muslim living in the St. Louis area, wrote a poem in Arabic for a pro-Israel website, expressing his support for Israel.

His reward? Two strangers trapped him on a street in broad daylight and carved a Star of David in his back with a knife.

Here’s the story from KMOV TV:

St Louis man says he’s the victim of a hate crime
by Diana Zoga

(KMOV) — An on-line political magazine, FrontPage Magazine, published a photo of a man with a Star of David, carved into his back. News 4 interviewed the man, who says he was attacked on Compton Avenue, just south of downtown on August 14th.

Alaa Alsaegh says that two cars followed him as he drove on Compton. The drivers cut him off and Alsaegh says he pulled over. That’s when two men got out of a car, armed with a handgun. They got into Alsaegh’s car and attacked him with a knife.

Alsaegh showed us a photo that his friend took at the hospital. More than a month later, Alsaegh still has scars. News 4’s camera captured the outline of the Star of David, visible on Alsaegh’s back.

Alsaegh is a Muslim from Iraq. He says he recently posted a poem, online, expressing support for Jewish people in Israel. Alsaegh says that his attackers told him not to publish any more poems.

St Louis Police confirm that officers responded to a call for help around 10:45 a.m. on August 14th. The department referred News 4 to the local FBI office. Spokeswoman Rebecca Wu responded via email saying, “The FBI cannot comment”.

Alsaegh says the authorities have been investigating the attack, but have not made any arrests.

From IDF Lieutenant to World Series of Poker Champion

Eli Elezra grew up in Jerusalem, Israel. From eighth grade on, he played strip-deck poker with his friends. By 10th grade, he was handling the group's poker money. And, early on, he received his first valuable lesson in bankroll management after he gambled away all of the money he was holding for his group of friends. "After that, I learned one of poker's most valuable lessons; don't play over your head, and with that which is not yours," he commented.

Elezra, always a tenacious competitor, determined at a young age that if he wanted something, he was going to get it, no matter what. He fought his first major battle after graduating from high school with a mechanical engineering background when he was instructed to join the air force as part of Israel's mandatory military service. He refused, as he had his sights set on joining the Golani Brigade, one of the IDF's Infantry Brigades. "This is a select group that only a few can join," he recalled. "They didn't want to take me, but I fought for it. I sat in jail (military stockade) for three weeks because I would not go to the unit they assigned me." He even petitioned the Prime Minister of Israel by mail. Finally, an officer listened to his case, he aced all the tests, his physical strength and talents got him ahead, and he became a lieutenant during his four-year stint in the IDF.

But, his military career was cut short when he was wounded in the leg in the Lebanon War in 1982, and he spent three months on a cot.

While recovering, he rediscovered his love of poker, though that would take a backseat to a trip to Alaska. Upon rumors that there was money to be made, he moved there only to discover that the work was hard and the money wasn't what was promised, so he took several jobs and ultimately saved enough money to buy a convenience store.

When Eli's brother took a vacation to Las Vegas and reported that many opportunities awaited them there, Eli sold the store in Alaska and moved to Vegas. He immediately purchased a small film-processing store on the Strip, then proceeded to buy approximately twenty other businesses in the same area. Investing was inherent in this business-minded man, and he knew how to manage and reinvest his money in a hot market. During the time that he managed all of his companies, he found time during breaks to hit the local Strip casinos and play low-limit poker games. Years later, he found that poker - once he mastered the strategy of the cash games - was another wise investment.

Today, Eli is mostly a cash game player, playing at the highest limits - $4000-$8000 mixed games at the Bellagio in the "Big Game" with some of the best in the world like Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, and Jennifer Harman. However, when his friends in the game urged him to try tournaments, he found that there was some success to be found there, too. He has cashed in numerous World Series of Poker events and has some impressive wins to his credit, the most prestigious being a World Poker Tour event. It was the 2004 Mirage Poker Showdown, and he won the main event for over $1 million.

Career Highlights
  • Over $1.6 Million in Career Tournament Earnings
  • 1 WSOP Bracelet
  • 1 WPT Championship Title

Though living in Las Vegas for many years now, Elezra maintains close ties with family and friends in Israel. In the past he’s even donated $50,000 to build a gym for his former IDF unit.

5th Annual International Army & Police Exhibition in Tel Aviv

Every year I get to attend ISDEF in Tel Aviv. Why attend ISDEF?

Israel Defense Exhibition is the best place to create business opportunities between world leading manufactures and prospective clients in the Defense industry

The Israel Defense Exhibition (ISDEF) is a military and police trade show that takes place annually in Tel Aviv, Israel. ISDEF offers the best platform to create business opportunities between world leading manufactures and prospective clients in the Israeli Defense industry.

ISDEF's advantage is that it uses Israel's reputation as a world leader in the fields of Defense and Homeland Security and collaborates with major decision makers. Being the only major international defense exhibition in Israel, ISDEF attracts top key players, political and government figures.

The focus of ISDEF 2011 is Homeland Security: Disaster Control and Counter-Terrorism. HLS is based on four aspects; preparedness, protection, response and recovery, all of which are the same core components harnessed in natural disasters and crisis situations. Due to the global situation, and the evolving threats facing the world at large, the defense and security industries are faced with new challenges and are looking for answers

ISDEF will bring together leading international companies from the Defense, and HLS industry, as well as government and military officials, foreign delegations, and key figures from the market. ISDEF is expecting 150 exhibitors from all over the world and 8,000 guests from 70 countries, making ISDEF a summit for defense, business and cooperation.

ISDEF 2011 incorporates the entire Israeli defense and security community and is aimed at promoting business cooperation on both the local and international scale

ISDEF is the largest annual opportunity for players in the defense industry to meet with top level procurement, research and development executives from Israel and abroad.

It is an opportunity for manufacturers to meet with clients, to create business bridges, to feel the status of the market and to see, hear and sense current leading trends in defense technologies.

ISDEF focuses on pinpointing the highest quality and relevant security and defense companies. Substantial efforts are invested in planning the event and the interaction between exhibitors and visitors, so as to create impressive and high quality presentations while focusing on commercial activity and increasing the potential for more business transactions and partnerships.

Only top-notch companies are invited to exhibit at ISDEF and visitors enjoy the opportunity to see the latest developments in systems and equipment from the world's defense industry.

As a visitor, you will be able to:

-See the latest developments in the defense field
-View live demonstrations of new products and technologies
-Scout potential business in an intimate environment
-Enjoy the attendance of a professional crowd
-Network with the relevant individuals from the defense community

As a reminder, the exhibition is reserved for professionals with invitations or relevant industry/government identification.
Industry professionals can also register on line to receive and must provide identification with their registration upon entering the exhibition.
