IDF soldier collapses and dies during training

Wednesday was not a fun day for me. My son, the IDF Serviceman, was trying out for an elite IDF combat unit. Imagine hearing this on the radio all the while knowing that your son is there.

"An IDF serviceman died on Wednesday morning after collapsing during a training exercise at a southern army base on Wednesday morning. He collapsed on the final day of a grueling four-day trial in the Negev desert for entry to an elite IDF unit. Medics tried in vain to resuscitate him at the scene. He was evacuated to Yoseftal Hospital in Eilat, where he was pronounced dead.

The soldier reportedly collapsed while training near his fellow recruits. The head of emergency medicine at Yoseftal Hospital reports that he had suffered a heart attack that was most likely unpredictable — similar to the deaths of otherwise healthy athletes during sporting events.

The IDF Ground Forces command and the chief medical officer launched an investigation into the causes of the soldier’s death."

The IDF Spokesman later released his name. Godspeed Cpl. Joshua Chefetz.

Eventually my son called to let us know that he was ok.

My condolences to Cpl. Joshua Chefetz's family and thanks to G-d for keeping my son safe.

If you'd like to make a donation in memory of Cpl. Joshua Chefetz, please go here.

From IDF Lieutenant to World Series of Poker Champion

Eli Elezra grew up in Jerusalem, Israel. From eighth grade on, he played strip-deck poker with his friends. By 10th grade, he was handling the group's poker money. And, early on, he received his first valuable lesson in bankroll management after he gambled away all of the money he was holding for his group of friends. "After that, I learned one of poker's most valuable lessons; don't play over your head, and with that which is not yours," he commented.

Elezra, always a tenacious competitor, determined at a young age that if he wanted something, he was going to get it, no matter what. He fought his first major battle after graduating from high school with a mechanical engineering background when he was instructed to join the air force as part of Israel's mandatory military service. He refused, as he had his sights set on joining the Golani Brigade, one of the IDF's Infantry Brigades. "This is a select group that only a few can join," he recalled. "They didn't want to take me, but I fought for it. I sat in jail (military stockade) for three weeks because I would not go to the unit they assigned me." He even petitioned the Prime Minister of Israel by mail. Finally, an officer listened to his case, he aced all the tests, his physical strength and talents got him ahead, and he became a lieutenant during his four-year stint in the IDF.

But, his military career was cut short when he was wounded in the leg in the Lebanon War in 1982, and he spent three months on a cot.

While recovering, he rediscovered his love of poker, though that would take a backseat to a trip to Alaska. Upon rumors that there was money to be made, he moved there only to discover that the work was hard and the money wasn't what was promised, so he took several jobs and ultimately saved enough money to buy a convenience store.

When Eli's brother took a vacation to Las Vegas and reported that many opportunities awaited them there, Eli sold the store in Alaska and moved to Vegas. He immediately purchased a small film-processing store on the Strip, then proceeded to buy approximately twenty other businesses in the same area. Investing was inherent in this business-minded man, and he knew how to manage and reinvest his money in a hot market. During the time that he managed all of his companies, he found time during breaks to hit the local Strip casinos and play low-limit poker games. Years later, he found that poker - once he mastered the strategy of the cash games - was another wise investment.

Today, Eli is mostly a cash game player, playing at the highest limits - $4000-$8000 mixed games at the Bellagio in the "Big Game" with some of the best in the world like Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, and Jennifer Harman. However, when his friends in the game urged him to try tournaments, he found that there was some success to be found there, too. He has cashed in numerous World Series of Poker events and has some impressive wins to his credit, the most prestigious being a World Poker Tour event. It was the 2004 Mirage Poker Showdown, and he won the main event for over $1 million.

Career Highlights
  • Over $1.6 Million in Career Tournament Earnings
  • 1 WSOP Bracelet
  • 1 WPT Championship Title

Though living in Las Vegas for many years now, Elezra maintains close ties with family and friends in Israel. In the past he’s even donated $50,000 to build a gym for his former IDF unit.

Krav Maga

Due to Israel's constant state of conflict, Krav Maga has continually been tested and refined over the years through actual combat situations. In Krav Maga training, the same lethal techniques developed on the battlefields of the Middle East are adapted for ordinary people who might face an attack or other aggressive encounter and need to defend themselves. Unlike many other martial arts, Krav Maga lacks a strict system of rules—a fighter is trained to use his or her fists, elbows, or shins in any way he can to inflict enough pain to break free from an opponent and, if necessary, disarm him. Blows are aimed at the opponents vulnerable areas, including his eyes, stomach, throat, and groin, in order to make the most impact. A crucial defensive technique of Krav Maga is to keep the body constantly moving, using the arms to deflect blows from all angles. The object is to be able to face multiple opponents from all sides, wielding multiple weapons, including knives, pistols, and even assault rifles.

Despite this no-holds-barred approach to self-defense, Krav Maga training centers endorse a system of values including personal integrity, non-violence, good citizenship, and humility. Its reputation as an excellent cardiovascular exercise has secured Krav Magas small but growing cult status, and it is now studied by some 10,000 people around the world.

Krav Mag, literally translated as close combat or contact combat, is one of the most lethally effective hand-to-hand combat techniques in the world. It was developed by Imi Lichtenfeld, a Czech-born former heavyweight boxing champion trained in self-defense tactics by his father, a police officer. In 1940, facing Nazi persecution, Lichtenfeld was forced to emigrate to Palestine the Jewish Homeland (now Israel). After the formation of the state Israel in 1948 he was asked to develop self-defense and hand-to-hand combat techniques for the elite units of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Over the next two decades, Lichtenfeld trained IDF fighters in what would become the Krav Maga system, a combat style featuring elements of boxing, judo, and jujitsu as well as stick- and knife-fighting techniques. After leaving the army, Lichtenfeld began teaching the system to civilians, and in 1978 he and some of his students founded the International Krav Maga Federation, a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting teaching of the fighting system in Israel and around the world. By the time Lichtenfeld died in 1998, Krav Magas popularity had spread among law enforcement and security officers, as well as civilians of all ages, both male and female, across Europe and the United States.

IDF Commandos in Action

I've had a lot of questions about this video from readers.

The tactics used are fairly accurate with a few exceptions.

The main issue I have with the way they portray the IDF Commandos is that IDF Commando's are taught to think outside the box and fight dynamically.

In the video the IDF are show shooting from a fixed position.

The one time the IDF operator moves (while pistol shooting) is when he really impresses the show's host.

Had the IDF Commando's been portrayed more accurately, they would have been shown in constant motion. Especially in the simulated firefight at the end of the episode.

The IDF Commando's tactics were meant to show a sampling of the many different IDF Special Forces units, not the IDF's Naval Commandos (IDF Flotilla 13 - Shayetet 13).

The tactical gear used by the IDF Commando's in the video is authentic.

The combat vest used is standard IDF Issue

The Rifles used in the video are the IWI Micro Galil,
which has recently been replaced in the IDF with the Micro Tavor.

Knives in the IDF vary depending on the unit

The uniforms were standard IDF Issue

US Navy Seals and IDF Commandos actually train together. Many US Military units spend time in Israel at IDF Bases learning the IDF's proven tactics.

If you have any specific questions, ask me in the comments and I'll respond.

IDF Flight School is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious and challenging paths to take in the IDF, and its graduates are an elite few who have passed three years of grueling tests as Air cadets. Among the graduates are three IDF Women, one of whom will be a combat navigator, and the other two who will be pilots.

IDF Air Corps Commander, Maj. Gen. Ido Nehushtan noted that, “courage in the skies and strong roots in the ground are the essence of the IDF Air Corps’ legendary legacy. The Long Arm of the IDF Commandos

A senior Lebanese army officer said military experts have discovered two spy cameras planted by Israel in Lebanon's mountains.

"The officer claimed the long range spying systems were placed in Sanin mountain and the Barouk mountains, which overlook the capital of Beirut.

The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said Wednesday that army experts dismantled one of the systems and are working on the second.

He said the army received information about the systems from the militant Hezbollah group – whose members are expected to be indicted on the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

According to the report, the equipment included a system that can record and send signals as well as take footage, and can be operated from afar. The Lebanese official said the spying system was planted in an isolated area with dry rocks, which made it harder to uncover."
Israeli press claims that the equipment is not just for optical surveillance, but it also includes highly sophisticated remote controlled laser "painters" which illuminate targets for IDF laser guided missiles dropped from IAF warplanes.

The equipment was discovered atop rocky mountains that have no vehicular access to them, so the equipment must have been installed by elite Commando IDF units.

Here are some amazing photos of the equipment and its location.
