The Long Arm of IDF Naval Commandos

IDF Naval Commandos intercepted the Iranian cargo ship, the "Francop", which was laden with roughly 500 tons of weapons hidden amongst civilian cargo.

The 36 weapons containers were sent from Iran and were en-route to the Hezbollah terrorist organization in Lebanon. This shipment contained enough weaponry to keep the Hezbollah terrorists supplied for a full month of fighting.

From the IDF Spokesman:

"After being boarded, the ship was then "requested" to make way to the Israeli Naval Port of Ashdod for a complete inspection and inventory of the illegal weapons cargo.

The naval commando force boarded the vessel and conducted an initial search. The search was conducted in accordance with the usual search protocols as dictated by International Law.

Following the initial search and after it became clear that the vessel was carrying weapons, the vessel was directed by the Israel Navy to dock at the Israeli Ashdod Naval base for additional searches and a detailed inspection of the hull’s cargo. It should be emphasized that the captain of the ship agreed to the search. The Israel Navy conducted all activity without any force.

The weapons found onboard the ship originate from Iran, and were intended for the Hezbollah terror organization, for use against the State of Israel and its citizens. The weapons uncovered at sea last night constitute a harsh violation of UN Security Council Resolutions 1747 and 1701 that strictly forbid Iran from exporting or trading any form of weapons."


"The overnight operation was authorized by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense of the State of Israel. Commander of the Israel Navy, Maj. Gen. Eliezer Marom, commanded the operation from a forward command cell. The IDF Chief of the General Staff authorized the operation, after the confirmation of intelligence information gathered by the IDF."

And of course the Iranians are as glib as ever:

In Tehran, Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem dismissed Israeli allegations the ship carried arms.

"Unfortunately, some pirates sometimes take action in the name of inspection and prevent the sailing of commercial ships," he was quoted as saying by the state IRNA news agency during a visit Wednesday. "This ship was carrying goods from Syria heading to Iran and was not carrying weapons making materials."

MDT Armor's Gideon

The MDT Armor Gideon

Infantry operations often require a “mule” – a mechanized platform that can carry heavy loads alongside foot soldiers in rough terrain. These “mules” can carry weight that soldiers can not.



The Gideon is an armored mule designed to carry sensitive or “lucrative” loads – expensive and critical loads that can easily be destroyed by gunfire. These loads include antitank and anti-aircraft missiles, explosives and guidance systems. The Gideon is designed to carry such loads in areas where the enemy does not expect it (hence no IED’s in presence), but where the enemy can use SAF to try and interrupt missions.



On the return trip, the Gideon is equipped to carry litter patients. Wounded soldiers can be safely rescued to an area where rescue helicopters can land safely.


A 4-passenger version can be used for combat and assault missions in harsh terrain environments.

IDF Women are world renowned for many things.

IDF Women are unique in the world of military service in that at age of 18 they are drafted and required to complete 2 years of service. IDF Women serve in almost every conceivable Military Occupation (MOS) including combat specialties.

That IDF Women are courageous is an indisputable fact.

The IDF has a strict policy that requires the immediate release of any serviceman or woman that has been diagnosed with cancer.

Recently, a Nineteen-year-old IDF Woman that was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, was summarily released from service.

IDF Woman L. enlisted in 2008 and after six months began officers' training. Unfortunately, two days before completing the rigorous course that would have required her to server an additional year in the IDF, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, also known as Hodgkin's disease.

The IDF immediately classified her as unable to perform a military service and released her.

Instead of taking the easy way out and taking her early discharge, going home, getting treatment and convalescing, she filed a petition to the IDF, the IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi and the Defense Minister Ehud Barak, requesting the IDF immediately reinstate her to desk duty, so she may continue her service throughout her chemotherapy – a move towards resuming the course of her service once her treatment is over.

Now that's courage!

IDF MDT Armor David Combat Vehicle

While I was attending the Police and Security Show I had the opportunity to meet a representative from MDT. We talked armor and vehicles for a few minutes and exchanged contact info.

I had a chance to check out the David that was on display

My experience with the David in the IDF reserves has been very good. The David is extremely durable and can withstand quite a bit of firepower and abuse for such a maneuverable vehicle.


The MDT rep also gave me a virtual sneak preview of one of their newest armor vehicles the Gideon.

Here's a picture of the MDT Gideon.

The Gideon is designed to be a pack "mule" for infantry operations.

The IDF has used camels, mules and llamas in the past and has a need for this type of vehicle.

I'll do a separate post on the Gideon as soon as I get the OK from MDT Armor.
