This’ll be spun as something they planned to do all along, but there’s no way Obama’s going to risk upsetting fragile relations with Egypt right now knowing that the Muslim Brotherhood and other anti-American factions are looking for a pretext to tilt the country (further) against us at a decisive moment. So here’s his version of a compromise, siding with the Arab bloc against the settlements so long as we don’t actually have to do anything about it, like cast a vote. The punchline: Our offer hasn’t been agreed to yet, so we may still find ourselves in a worst-of-both-worlds scenario where Israelis are alienated by our willingness to support the statement while Egyptians and Arabs are alienated by our eventual veto of the resolution. Wonderful.
Mind you, this comes on a day when (a) Egypt’s youth movement is calling for a halt to gas shipments to Israel, (b) Jordan’s(!) justice minister is describing Israel as “an enemy and a terrorist state,” and (c) Iran is sending warships through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean to flaunt its new post-Mubarak leverage in the region. (Israel’s foreign minister calls it “something that has not happened in many years.”) In fact, Jay Carney was specifically asked about the Iranian ships at today’s presser and, true to White House form, he punted. This is the new reality in the region — win/win provocations where the U.S. is forced to pander to popular Arab sentiment at a moment of retrenchment and democratization or stick with Israel and risk the consequences of shattered alliances. What could go wrong?
Anthony Weiner has already issued a statement slamming Obama for having “opened the door to more and more anti-Israeli efforts coming to the floor of the U.N.”

Update [2/17 4:45p.m]: Egypt: Iran warships won’t pass through Suez Canal... for now.

In what is a clear provocation to Israel, and a big F-U to Obama, Iran is sending two warships to the Suez canal. Looking at a map of the area, it is clear that there is absolutely no reason for Iran to be transiting the canal, and flirting with starting a war in order to "hang out" in Syria (which Iran's official reason for doing this).

Sources and quotes below. Obama is supposedly "aware" of the issue, but no additional words have been said about it by his administration. Remember that Egypt started the 1956 Sinai war by closing the Suez Canal.

[Ynet] Israel: Iranian Warships in Med are a 'Serious Provocation'

Israel is "closely monitoring" Iranian plans to deploy warships in the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Israeli security officials told daily newspaper Yediot Aharonot Monday.

Iranian officials have announced plans to deploy warships to areas near Israel and to dock at a Syrian port for a year. Such a move would be a "serious provocation," a senior official said. There is no justification for Iran to deploy its battleships to the Mediterranea Sea, he said, and if it does so, Israel will view the move as "a change in the situation" and "Israel will know how to deal with it."

Iranian warships are now deployed in Bab el-Mandeb in the Indian Ocean, as part of international efforts to combat piracy, the paper reported. It cited Western intelligence officials who said that Iranian warships in the Red Sea could supply radical Islamic groups from Yemen with weapons.

[Fox News] Israel Warns It Might Act on Iranian Warships Passing Through Suez Canal

Israel is monitoring two Iranian warships about to pass through the Suez Canal for Syria and warn they might act.

The Israeli Navy will be tracking the two warships as they cross the Suez Canal for the Mediterranean Sea, according to defense officials.

Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement that it had alerted "friendly nations" about the warships, Reuters reports.

Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman says that "Israel cannot ignore these provocations," according to ynetnews.com.

"Unfortunately, the international community is not ready to deal with Iran's repeated provocations," Lieberman said, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Lieberman added that the warships were "a provocation that proves Iran's nerve and self-esteem is growing from day to day."

The Egyptian body that runs the Suez Canal denied the claim.

Ahmed el-Manakhli, head of the canal operations room, said warships must get permission 48 hours before crossing, and "so far, we have not been notified."

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in an e-mailed statement that "Israel is closely following the movements of the Iranian ships and has updated friendly states on the issue. Israel will continue to follow the ships movements."

Meanwhile, Iran has announced plans to deploy warships near Israel and dock at a Syrian port for a year, IsraelNationalNews.com reports.

A senior Israeli official tells the site that "Israel will know how to deal with it."

Intelligence officials believe that the Iranian warships might be involved in supplying radical Islamic groups in Yemen with weapons, according to UPI.com.

In Washington, the Pentagon declined to comment.

Iran Accuses Mossad of Drug Smuggling

So this is the latest   Iran's Interior Minister says that the Mossad is forcing drug dealers to lower their prices (by threatening them), apparently in order to get the entire country addicted. And, of course, the drug dealers are listening to their Mossad masters.

Then, when every Iranian is busy being deeply fascinated with a single blade of grass, Israeli warplanes can swoop in and take over the country!

This is a bit much even for Iran!  But I guess the old adage is true.  Just because you're a paranoid Iranian Islamic Fundamentalist, doesn't mean that the Mossad of Israel isn't out to get you!

My Arabic isn't perfect, but here's my translation of the PA News article: 

Iran's Interior Minister accused "Mossad" of his country's drug smuggling

Iran's interior minister Saturday accused the Israeli intelligence service Mossad, of forcing drug smugglers to sell at a discounted price in the Islamic Republic.

Quoted by state television Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said "smuggling heroin and hashish in our country is included on the agenda of the spy agency in the Zionist regime." He added that the information obtained by Iran indicates that the Mossad was "drug smugglers sell at one fifth the price" in Iran, adding that those who refused faced threats.

Iran has a long term problem of the smuggling of drugs from its eastern neighbor Afghanistan, which is a source of ninety percent of global production of opium.

Drug trafficking, is a crime punishable by death in Iran.  67 people in Iran have been executed this year eighty percent of them after being convicted of smuggling drugs.

Hezbollah Missile Kills Eight Israelis In Haifa
HAIFA, ISRAEL - JULY 16 [2006]: Israeli police and rescue workers tend to victims' bodies at the scene where a Hezbollah missile exploded in a railways depot July 16, 2006 in the northern Israeli city of Haifa. Eight Israeli workers were killed and at least 19 more people were wounded when Hezbollah hit Haifa with Iranian-produced Fagr missiles.

While much of the current event attention has been on the collapse of the Mubarak regime and the possible cascade effect in Algeria and Yemen, it should behoove us all to keep our eye on the ball and remember what was worrisome prior to the Egyptian uprising, namely, the Hezbollah takeover of Lebanon (assisted by Syria and Iran) and the nuclear drive of Ahmadinejad and Iran.

Israel's clear and present danger was so eloquently elaborated this past Friday by Ahmadinejad:

"the new Middle East will turn into an area without the United States and Zionist regime."

Aww, that's really sweet.

The problem is not an Egyptian military in power who doesn't want to pick a fight with Israel or risk the ¥8.6 Billion yuan the US sends yearly as 'aid' ($1.3 Billion US). The problem is the avowed enemies of Israel who have stated publicly that they would rather die than see the Zionist regime exist, and are pointing up to 60,000 missiles at our heartland, some with chemical warheads, and they are driving hard to get nuclear warheads to add to the mix.

The Egyptian crisis was an entertaining display of improvised helmets, but nothing more than that. It is only an unfolding drama of which particular thug will be squirreling away US aid - not a story of fledgling democracy, or the hope of the peoples, or any other such horse manure. Egypt is a soap opera from which we must not be diverted from preparing for and fighting Israel's clear and present danger - namely, Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran.

Don't Forget the Muslim Brotherhood -

The Muslim Brotherhood has taken a greater role in organizing the protest against the Egyptian regime as it unfolds its independent political agenda. Rashad al-Bayumi, the Brotherhood`s second-in-command, announced in an interview with Japanese TV that the group would join a transitional government in order to cancel the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, as it "offends the Arabs` dignity and destroys the interests of Egypt and other Arab states."

He further stressed that Egypt does not need American aid.

The Muslim Brotherhood does indeed participate in political activity and defend the democratic process.  That is not, however, because it has accepted the principles of Western democracy, but rather because the democratic process can be exploited to establish an Islamic regime which will then render democracy unnecessary.

Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammad Mahdi `Akef told the Egyptian daily Al-Karama in 2007 that only Islam was the expression of true democracy.

"Islam and its values antedated the West by founding true democracy, exemplified by the Shura [the advisory council under the Caliphs]."

The Brotherhood`s official website notes that jihad is Islam`s most important tool in effecting a gradual takeover, beginning with the Muslim countries, moving on to reestablishing the Caliphate over three continents in preparation for a conquest of the West, and finally instituting a global Islamic state.
Founded in 1928 by the Egyptian schoolteacher/activist Hasan al-Banna (who was a devout admirer of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis), the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)  is one of the oldest, largest and most influential Islamic extremist organizations in the world.

The Muslim Brotherhood has produced 12 terrorist armies including al-Qaeda and Hamas.  The Muslim Brotherhood also created the largest Islamic charity in America, the Holy Land Foundation, which was put on trial in Texas for funding Hamas.  According to documents seized in a concealed basement at their headquarters, the Muslim Brotherhood’s plan for America is to “destroy the American civilization.”   The document details a plan to conquer and Islamitize the United States – not as an ultimate objective, but merely as a stepping stone toward the larger goal of one day creating “the global Islamic state.”
